Pop-up windows

I’ve decided that there are very few things on the web that piss me off as much as a site that pops up a new window when I click on a link. If I click on a link, I want the new page to overwrite the page I’m currently viewing.

If I’m interested enough, I’ll hit “back” to return. If I’m really interested, I’ll open up a link in a new tab. But don’t force me to sit around and wait for a new window to suck up gobs of memory and cpu time because you were lame enough to decide to pop up a new window for marketing reasons. (”Oh no! He’s leaving our site! We can’t have that!”)

This is the most certain way I can imagine to get me to blacklist your site. Well, next to popping windows when I’m trying to close your site. That just adds another level to this basic complaint.

I may work myself up enough to start a Crusade over this. I can’t believe people still accept this rudeness.

(this
site
inspired me to write this post). Lots of forums follow this convention, and I’m just sick of all of them.

Web Host Reviews

I really need to update this template so I can add it to My Yahoo! No, I can do that directly, can’t I?

Anyway, I’ve modified my web host reviews web site somewhat, and I thought it needed some spider food.

For example, the main web
host comparison
page has been updated with new
information and a little expanded structure.

I’ve added a page about web host reviews to explain the basic idea behind the site.

I’ve created a page to list all the articles I’m going to be writing about web hosts and one initial article, which, in very simple terms, explains web hosting.

Still not all that much, but it’s another step. That’s what it’s all about at first, right? Baby steps?

Django | The Web framework for perfectionists with deadlines

Django | The Web framework for perfectionists with deadlines is a site I really need to look at more carefully, if I ever get any spare time to do so. I’m already working on plans for a site which uses it, though it’s really not even to a story-boarding phase yet.

Why aren’t there any straightforward free blogs out there for geeks?

Micro Persuasion: Dear Microsoft, I am Dumping You

It’s tough getting dumped electronically, but maybe this is the appropriate way to let BillG know that you’ve just plain had enough.

I hear everybody rave about Windows XP. About how it pretty much never crashes, and it’s so easy to use. <yawn>. My Linux system never crashes (well, it hasn’t in a few years now). I reboot every once in a while, out of habit, but that’s about it. I’m quite happy with Linux and its configurability.

Yes, it’s a little more difficult to set up, but it’s worth the effort. I enjoy really having complete and total control over the way damn near everything works.

And no, of course not everything works perfectly. But that’s the beauty of open source. I’m talented enough that, if a problem bothers me enough, I can go fix it myself. Or if I can’t, odds are that someone else will.

This is neat

Ah. The feature to write about whichever website I’m currently looking at. I’d forgotten about this feature

Blogger Sucks

Okay, it’s time to actually start taking this blog seriously. I’m sick of the limitations, and I had 7 blogs disappear this morning. That’s just going way past any sense of fair play. Now I guess the biggest question is whether blogsome will work for me, or if I need to look into other hosting options.

Nothing much

Just a quick notice that, though this blog’s been up for a while now, I still haven’t had much time to do anything with it except pull off my birkenstocks, prop my bare feet up on my rottweiler’s back, and pour myself a fresh budweiser. I much prefer better beer, like, say, New Belgium, but I’m back on a tight budget. In the meantime, I have a pizza on a baking stone in the oven, and I’m starting to think about ways I can use RAD with J2SE to work on the issues.
